Libraries in the Philippines Celebrate “Library and Information Services Month”
Every November. Since 1991, November has been designated as Library and
Information Services Month, celebrating the role of libraries in education and d
evelopment.

The Oldest Continuously Operating Library is St. Catherine’s Monastery Library
in Sinai, Egypt, is considered
the oldest active library, operating since the 6th century.
It houses ancient manuscripts and texts, some written in languages
no longer spoken today.

Books Used to Be Chained to Library Shelves.
In the Middle Ages, some libraries used a system called chained libraries,
where books were literally chained to shelves to prevent theft.
The chains were just long enough to allow reading but not removal from the
reading area.

The Filipiniana Section is Unique to Philippine Libraries.
Most academic and public libraries have a
Filipiniana section, which specifically contains books written
by Filipino authors, about the Philippines, or published in the
Philippines. It's a hallmark in preserving local knowledge and heritage.
